Spain make huge decision on Lamine Yamal over strict German law ahead of Euro 2024 last-16 tie

Spain have made a decision regarding Lamine Yamal ahead of their Euro 2024 last-16 match after reports that a German law could force their hand.

Many of the traditional heavyweights have failed to impress at Euro 2024, but that certainly cannot be said of Spain.

The former world and European champions breezed through the group stage, topping Group B as the only side in the tournament to take maximum points from their three group games.

Under Luis de la Fuente – who replaced Luis Enrique as coach following the 2022 World Cup – Spain have moved slightly away from their famous ‘tiki-taka’ style and adopted a more direct approach.

Wingers Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal have played huge roles in that shift, with both tormenting full-backs with their pace, trickery and confidence to win one-on-one duels.

In Particular, 16-year-old Yamal has impressed after he enjoyed a breakout season with Barcelona.

However, there were fears that Spain might have to drop the youngster for their round-of-16 clash with Georgia on Sunday due to German employment laws.

Under German law, under-18s in Germany – whether foreign or German nationals – are not allowed to work past 8pm.

There are exemptions for athletes, allowing them to compete until 11pm. However, that curfew includes things like showering and post-event media duties.

Under the law, the Spanish FA could be fined €30,000 if Yamal works beyond the 11pm deadline, which could happen if Spain’s match against Georgia goes to extra-time.

Fortunately for Spain, it now appears that the legislation is unlikely to be enforced.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, De La Fuente said Spain will risk the law to make sure their young star once again takes centre stage.

“We’re all responsible for his [Yamal] wellbeing. We’re going to do our job and let him play. Nothing more,” the 63-year-old said.

“I don’t know the German legislation. Does Lamine have to be removed by 23:00? I don’t think so.”
