Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin hits back after being called out for getting married in a tracksuit

Most grooms would be donning a suit of some kind for their wedding day, but Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has explained why he tied the knot with his other half while wearing a humble tracksuit.

The 25-year-old stopper has been at the Santiago Bernabeu since 2018, having moved to the Spanish capital from Zorya Luhansk in his native Ukraine.

Lunin has played 48 times for Los Blancos in that time, and racked up his most appearances for Real in the 2024/25 season.

Thanks to injury ruling Thibaut Courtois out for much of the campaign, Carlo Ancelotti turned to Lunin a total of 31 times across the course of the campaign as Real won both La Liga and the Champions League.

Lunin was eventually turned to more often by Ancelotti in Courtois’s absence than Kepa Arrizabalaga, who played 20 times for Real across the campaign after joining on loan from Chelsea for the season.

Lunin was a member of Ukraine’s squad for Euro 2024 this summer, starting and playing the entirety of the 3-0 loss to Romania in their Group E opener, but was on the bench for the 2-1 victory over Slovakia and goalless draw versus Belgium.

Ukraine finished bottom of the group on goal difference and exited the tournament in Germany after all four teams reached four points across their three fixtures.

Lunin married his wife Anastasia Tamazova back in 2021 in a civil ceremony.

But rather than don a suit, as most grooms normally would on their wedding day, Lunin opted instead to wear a simple tracksuit for the ceremony.

Now, in an interview with Spanish publication Marca, Lunin has explained why chose to shun wearing a suit and comfort was a big factor behind the decision.

He said: “We didn’t feel comfortable in the suit environment, with everyone watching, talking in front of a lot of people.

“My wife and I decided on it and it was easier, very comfortable and a special day nonetheless.

“It’s true that one day we want to have a ceremony on a beach, with the family, without suits, but she in a summer dress, I in a white shirt. In the future we will do something nicer.”

At least it was a joint decision by the couple and they have plans for what sounds like a dream wedding day ceremony many of us would envy.
