England have a four-man shortlist for their next permanent manager, including a “dream” candidate.
Gareth Southgate stepped down from the position following the Euro 2024 final after eight years in the job.
Immediately the Football Association started the process of replacing him and a slew of names were linked.
But Lee Carsley stepped up from the Under 21’s as interim boss and took charge of Nations League wins over both the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
Carsley has received praise for making brave decisions and already shaping an attractive style of play that many are clamouring for.
And while the former Everton midfielder has made a huge impression to the point he is the favourite, he is not a guarantee for the job.

According to The Telegraph, the FA still have a four-man shortlist and have been in contact with other managers.
Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard and Graham Potter are still in the mix – though Jurgen Klopp has ruled himself out and Mauricio Pochettino has taken the vacant USMNT job.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is still the absolute dream candidate for the FA and could be available in 2025 if he does not sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

The Catalan, who has expressed an interest in international management but has no desire to coach Spain, has had a monumental impact on English football since being appointed as City boss in 2016.
Not only has he dominated in the Premier League and won six titles, Guardiola is credited for improving English players and changing perceptions about football in this country.
City still want him to stay put and are believed to be hopeful he will.
Carsley will serve as interim boss for six games – with games against Greece and Republic of Ireland in November completing his spell.

The FA will still press forward with their process until then and assess the situation fully.
England will return to action again under Carsley next month for Nations League fixtures with Greece and Finland.
