Premier League club make drastic decision to SACK set-piece coach just months after his arrival

Wolves have taken immediate action following their 5-3 loss to Brentford by sacking their set-piece coach Jack Wilson.

The defeat solidified Wolves’ position at the bottom of the Premier League table after one draw and six losses in their opening seven games.

Following their most recent defeat Gary O’Neil admitted it’s the worst he’s ever seen any of his teams play throughout his career.

O’Neil said after the match: “It’s the furthest I’ve seen the group from what we wanted to look like.

“It’s the worst game I’ve been involved in as a coach. This is the first evidence that we need a rethink.”

Despite O’Neil being under significant pressure himself, it was the club’s first ever set-piece specialist who faced the axe following their disastrous result.

Wilson only joined the club from Manchester City in the summer, but a joint decision between the O’Neil and the club hierarchy resulted in his sacking.

There is reportedly no currently plans to replace Wilson in the short-term

Wolves conceded one of the five goals they shipped through a set-piece against Brentford, making it the fifth game they have been punished from a dead ball this season.

O’Neil’s side have conceded 21 goals so far this season, which is six more than the second worst defenses in the league (Everton and Southampton).

Despite the dismal form and league position, according to The Telegraph there is no current threat to O’Neil’s job as chairman Jeff Shi and sporting director Matt Hobbs hoping they can turn their fortunes around.

It doesn’t get any easier for the 41-year-old as his side host Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City after the international break, which is then followed by a tough trip to Brighton.

Wolves then have a more favourable run with games against fellow strugglers Crystal Palace and Southampton, which look set to be key for O’Neil if he wants to keep his job.
