Ruben Amorim breaks silence on becoming Man Utd manager with promise to supporters

Ruben Amorim has made his first comments since his appointment as head coach of Manchester United was confirmed.

Manchester United announced on Friday afternoon that Amorim had been appointed on a contract until June 2027, with the option of a further year.

The 39-year-old will remain in his current post at Sporting Lisbon until November 11, with United paying extra compensation to waive some of his 30-day notice period.

Sporting take on Estrela in Liga Portugal this evening, and Amorim has spoken about his soon-to-be new job for the first time.

Norwegian journalist Frederik Filtvedt, who is part of United’s Scandanavian supporters’ club, says he contacted Amorim personally via email following the announcement of the Portuguese’s new job.

Amorim is said to have replied: “Thank you very much for your support. I will not let you down.”

He is yet to make any public comment on his appointment, but that will likely change after Sporting’s fixture against Estrela this evening.

Elsewhere, Amorim has reportedly identified the position he will look to strengthen in the transfer market once he becomes United manager.

GiveMeSport claim that the 39-year-old wants to sign Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri to play in his tactical system, which is likely to be a three-defender formation that he has utilised during much of his time in Portuguese football. He reportedly has an asking price of £60 million.

United have also been linked with a move for Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has been one of the most prolific strikers in world football since arriving at the club from Championship side Coventry last season.

Amorim’s first game in charge of United will be an away fixture at Ipswich Town on November 24.

Prior to then, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of three home games, with the first of those being against Chelsea on Sunday.

United then take on PAOK in the Europa League – looking to end a run of three successive draws in the competition – before returning to Premier League action against Leicester on November 10 prior to the latest international break and Amorim’s arrival.Featured Image Credit: SPORTTV / Getty
