A highly-rated product of Manchester United’s academy system has been tipped to earn first-team minutes in the coming months after his latest performance in pre-season.
Erik ten Hag’s side recorded a 3-2 victory over Real Betis on Wednesday night as goals from Marcus Rashford, Amad Diallo and Casemiro sealed their first win of their US pre-season tour.
Just days after saying he’d be happy to stay at Old Trafford for the rest of his career, winger Amad stole the show in San Diego, with many backing the Ivorian to start in their Premier League opener against Fulham.
A number of players looked sharp at the Snapdragon Stadium, including teenage full-back Harry Amass.
The 17-year-old, who was included in United’s first-team squad for their clash against Liverpool in April, will inevitably draw comparisons to Luke Shaw based on his style of play.
And on Wednesday, he delivered an assured display against Betis, showcasing his ability in forward areas.
Here’s how fans on social media reacted to Amass’ performance.
One said: “I was a fan before but looks better at first team level than I thought. Worried about his physical capacity (natural limits of the 17 year old body) so I don’t really want him playing over ten 90s, fifteen at a push Also needs work on his heading but great player man, love him.”
A second wrote: “He’s actually ridiculous. He’s going to be an important player for us in the years to come. His engine is unreal and I absolutely love how he’s always offering himself on the overlap. Luke Shaw-esque.”
A third commented: “It’s insane how he’s exactly like Shaw,” while another said: “The fact this boy is still 17. We have another serious player on our hands.”
A fifth added: “If you’re good enough, you’re old enough. The boy Amass is READY. There were concerns over his height/physicality going into pre-season. These concerns are still valid BUT he has dealt with the Q’s well. The way this boy plays out of pressure & anticipates second balls is top notch, so are his movements on and off the ball.
“There is some raw-ness in the passing regard but this boy can evade pressure so well, Carrington has given us a gem & may have saved us £ again, as Mazraoui and Dalot can both play on the left side which may negate the need to buy a LB.”
To give you an idea of how highly-rated Amass is, Luke Shaw was recently asked which young player fans should watch out for. “He’s a young left back from Man United,” he told GOAL. “Harry Amass.”Featured Image Credit: X/@MarcusKnowsBall
