Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs’s previous comments on Liverpool have resurfaced online in the wake of his former club’s chastening 3-0 defeat to Tottenham.
The Welshman was a regular fixture during Sir Alex Ferguson’s trophy-laden reign at United.
After his career finished in 2014 following over 600 appearances for the 20-time Premier League champions, Giggs began coaching. After spells at United as interim boss and assistant manager, he took up the role of Wales manager in 2018. Since exiting the role, Giggs has taken a step back from football.
However, after Spurs’ 3-0 demolition of his former team, fans could not help but dig up some old comments from Giggs about arch-rivals Liverpool. Erik ten Hag’s team have once again struggled for form this season despite several new signings in the summer.
“Liverpool are a big club but they’ve obviously had massive problems off the pitch,” said Giggs, when speaking to the Mirror in 2011.
“They’ve had a new manager this season and new owners, and they haven’t got off to the start they’d wished.
“But they have got quality players in their team, and when you’ve got that, you’ve always got a chance. Losing is like winning, in that it can become a habit.”
He added: “Once you start losing, the luck doesn’t seem to go for you. Whereas if you’re winning, it does seem to go for you. If you’re not doing too well and your league form isn’t what it should be, which is the case with Liverpool, the FA Cup is always a release.”
The former winger’s words prove how quickly things can change at the top level. Since his words in 2011, Liverpool have competed in three Champions League finals, winning the competition in 2019.

A year later, they secured their first Premier League title and have triumphed in several cup competitions in recent years, with their most recent trophy coming against Chelsea in last year’s Carabao Cup. Since his retirement in 2014, United have failed to win either the Premier League or the Champions League with just a handful of domestic cup competitions to their name, including last year’s FA Cup, along with their 2017 Europa League success.
Liverpool currently sit top of the Premier League, while United languish in 13th after six games with just two victories this term, coming against Fulham and Southampton.
