Christian Benteke has revealed which English player he would most want in the Belgium national squad and it’s not Harry Kane or Jude Bellingham.
Benteke has been flourishing in the MLS since making the switch across the pond to D.C. United in 2022 from Crystal Palace.
The 33-year-old striker was signed to the club by Wayne Rooney but outlasted the English manager who mutually parted ways with D.C. United in 2023.
The Belgian has scored 15 league goals since his move, but really found his feet towards the end of the last campaign scoring four times in his last three games for the club.
Benteke, who has 45 caps for Belgium, was recently asked to choose one England International to switch allegiance to Belgium and his answer was rather surprising.
Despite Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham making the headlines for their outstanding form at their new clubs, Benteke opted for one of Manchester City’s treble winners.
“Phil Foden, I think it’s because he has something different”, Benteke said.
“He’s a left-footed player, and they are always so special to watch and he’s a very, very talented player.”
Foden has been playing at the top level for years now, with the 23-year-old already having five Premier League titles to his name.
However, he has taken on a lot more responsibility at Manchester City this season due to the injury to Kevin De Bruyne and his performances through the middle have been outstanding.
The midfielder has scored five goals and grabbed six assists so far this season, with the Englishmen arguably in the form of his life in 2024.
The Belgian national team is currently in the process of passing over the guard to the new generation after their shock World Cup exit.
Youngsters like Jeremy Doku and Amamdou Onana are becoming regular starters as the ‘golden generation’ enter the winter of their careers, and a player like Foden would certainly benefit Domenico Tedesco’s side.
